What is a Vessel of Opportunity?
A VOO is a vessel contracted by Western Canada Marine Response to respond to marine oil spills. Vessels should be aluminum or steel hulled and at least 18 feet in length.
What is Involved in the VOO Program?
Vessels and crews accepted into the program to perform operational tactics will go through an onboarding program, receive spill response training annually, and be compensated for their time. VOO members may also be asked to take part in spill response exercises.
What Role does VOO Play During an Incident?
Each vessel plays a different role in a response effort depending on the capabilities of the vessel and crew.
A VOO can be activated to deploy shoreline protection strategies, tow sweep systems, operate skimming devices and fill logistical duties among other various taskings that could be required in the event of an oil spill. During a large spill, VOO crews supplement WCMRC’s existing fleet of vessels stationed along the Coast. VOOs may also be activated as first responders in remote coastal locations.
